Throughout the year of 2016, I had the opportunity to intern for Digital Hype Networks, (DHN-TV). Digital Hype Networks is an up-and-coming entertainment news source website and web series with a large focus on pop-culture. Working as a communications intern for the company, I was able to lend a hand in almost every single project. By showing initiative and asking my supervisor to be able to have the chance to lend a hand in every project, I was able to learn the ins and outs of the different departments of not only a media company, but a start-up company as well.
My tasks initally invovled creating and executing original, entertaining digital content for dhntv.com. It was my responsibility to have 2-3 articles a week, focusing on music, movies or anything pop-culture related. After the website launch, I was then responsible for researching and compiling spreadsheets of upcoming events for possible coverage, as well as correlating publicity and client contact information. My responsibilities continued to grow within the company, being accountable for establishing client relationships, attending events, covering events, photographing events and recruiting and training new interns.
While I had a hand in these different areas, the majority of the latter of this internship was based around having a hand in social media management. I voiced to my supervisor that this was my main interest and focus, and his trust allowed me to take charge of a social media campaign over the summer. In this time, 3 1/2 months after given the title, follower count increased by 156% and engagement tripled across platforms. I worked to create a captivating, engaging voice for DHN-Tv online and establish a brand identity as a go-to for pop-culture news and information. I worked to create funny, creative and original content for Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat and Instagram. Creating this content included copy and images. Managing the social media accounts also included engaging with fans, potential influencers and companies on these sites as well. Through social media, I was able to facilitate relationships with three major companies that are now in the process of becoming partners with DHN-Tv. Examples of strategies used in this summer’s social media campaign can be found on the social media page. Programs and applications used during this internship included Crowdfire, HootSuite, Slack, Photoshop, Excel and Google Analytics.
Public relations and account coordinating were a large part of my overall internship.I now have a working knowledge of Excel spreadsheets, creating relationships with not only celebrities and band members, but also publicist/press contacts, as well as representing a company at an event. Throughout the summer, I created 3 detailed spreadsheets from DHN-TV of press contacts that include previous, present and potential clients that will be used after I am finished with my internship. Along with these contacts, I also worked in locating and contacting potential partners to advertise with. It was my duty to find websites in which DHN-Tv advertisements would be successful and also find partners to advertise on the DHN-Tv website. It was also my duty to coordinate which client belonged to which project and manage them all effectively.
Attending events as a media representative for the company was also a main task of mine as an intern. Researching the history, participants and outcome of these events was a large part of my internship, to ensure accurate and successful social media posts and content for the digital website.
